Drone cell cappings of Asian cavity-nesting honey bees (Apis spp.)

چکیده
Drone pupae of Apis cerana are sealed in their cells under a hard silken cap with central pore, feature notably lacking the closely related species, nigrocincta. In this paper, pore is confirmed for drone four additional species or putative cavity-nesting honey bees Asia. Inaccuracies literature to cell cappings Asian clarified. The character state each taxon was added recent phylogeny genus Apis. Parsimony analysis indicates that evolved once common ancestor all and subsequently lost Possible functions reviewed, but true reasons underlying its loss A. nigrocincta remain unresolved.

Drone and Worker Brood Microclimates Are Regulated Differentially in Honey Bees, Apis mellifera
BACKGROUND Honey bee (Apis mellifera) drones and workers show differences in morphology, physiology, and behavior. Because the functions of drones are more related to colony reproduction, and those of workers relate to both survival and reproduction, we hypothesize that the microclimate for worker brood is more precisely regulated than that of drone brood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We as...
متن کاملA Look into the Cell: Honey Storage in Honey Bees, Apis mellifera
Honey bees, Apis species, obtain carbohydrates from nectar and honeydew. These resources are ripened into honey in wax cells that are capped for long-term storage. These stores are used to overcome dearth periods when foraging is not possible. Despite the economic and ecological importance of honey, little is known about the processes of its production by workers. Here, we monitored the usage o...
متن کاملCold Ambient Temperature Promotes Nosema spp. Intensity in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera)
Interactions between parasites and environmental factors have been implicated in the loss of managed Western honey bee (=HB, Apis mellifera) colonies. Although laboratory data suggest that cold temperature may limit the spread of Nosema ceranae, an invasive species and now ubiquitous endoparasite of Western HBs, the impact of weather conditions on the distribution of this microsporidian in the ...
متن کاملThe foraging behaviour of honey bees, Apis mellifera: a review
Foraging behaviour is one of the distinctive behaviours of honey bees, Apis mellifera. This behaviour is the link between the honey bee colony and the ambient environment. Therefore, various in-colony and out-colony factors have an impact on this behaviour, and many studies have been employed to investigate these factors. Foraging behaviour is not advantageous only for the colony and for plant ...
متن کاملThermoregulation of water collecting honey bees (Apis mellifera).
Honey bees (Apis mellifera carnica, Apidae, Hymenoptera) visited a pond in order to collect water. During their stays at the pond the body surface temperature of water foragers was measured using contactless thermography. Irrespective of the ambient temperature (T(A)) which ranged from 13.6 to 27.2 degrees C, the water carriers reached thoracic temperatures of 36-38.8 degrees C (mean values of ...
